Off the slopes

A winter holiday in Zillertal offers much more than downhill skiing and snowboard fun!

Away from the slopes and lifts, there are unique experiences to lure you into the snowy winter world. Discover the Zillertal Alps from their most exclusive side while tobogganing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or on guided nocturnal ski tours. The options are as wide-ranging as your imagination, and you can hire any required equipment on site.

Snowshoeing

Forests with deep snow and wonderful panoramic views make Hochfügen an ideal starting point for hikes of all kinds - even in the winter. Discover the alpine world on snowshoes with a certified mountain and hiking guide. On lonely paths through snow-covered forests, you will discover untouched places and the tracks of wild animals.

The two- to three-hour ramble through the breath-taking Zillertal mountains is also possible in the moonlight, among glistening snow and sparkling stars. No prior knowledge or experience required. You’ll stop in a secluded alpine chalet for refreshments before you make the journey back.

The snowshoe hikes are on offer daily; groups are restricted to a maximum size of ten persons in order to avoid the risk of damaging the fragile environment of this alpine idyll. Advance booking is essential.

High-altitude cross-country ski trail

The high-altitude cross-country trail leads through the Zillertal Alps at a spectacular 1500 metres above sea level. Using a classic or skate-style technique, you can blithely glide through the snowy winter world. The use of the trail is free. The necessary equipment and professional advice can be obtained at the ski hire outlets in Hochfügen.

The trail starts directly from Hochfügen car park, next to the first lift cash desk in the direction of Gamsstein (Loassattel). From there, nine beautifully prepared cross-country skiing trails (medium to difficult) lead through the alpine mountains.

For ambitious beginners, the ski schools of Hochfügen offer individually tailored cross-country skiing courses and will hire out the necessary equipment.

Toboggan fun for the whole family

Tobogganing is one of the oldest traditional sports in Austria. In Hochfügen, the toboggan run offers 1.5 km of downhill fun for all ages and is open daily. The run is child-friendly and there is also an illuminated night toboggan run that will appeal especially to adults. After a scenic ascent through the snow-covered landscape of the Zillertal Alps, you can fortify yourself with hot drinks and a snack in the restaurant. Warmed up and in good spirits, you then slide down individually or in pairs back into the valley. You can hire your toboggan (from luge to the traditional “zipflbob”) at little cost in Hochfügen. The use of the toboggan run is free of charge and can be used as often as you can get up and down!

As easy as tobogganing looks at times, it can be challenging in reality. It is important to avoid hazards, wear safe footwear, warm clothing, gloves and a helmet with goggles. Of course, adults should lead by example! A moderate, proactive driving style ensures safety and control and takes account of other tobogganists.

Ski tours - the journey itself is the destination

Hochfügen and Zillertal are very popular with the many peaks and slopes, especially for those who love tours. Guaranteed snow and stable weather conditions make the traditional ascent to the summit a very special experience. The unique mountain world offers tours of various difficulty from easy to advanced.

NIGHT TOURS

Hochfügen offers nocturnal tour lovers the opportunity to use floodlit pistes 11, 13 and 14 for ascent and descent from the beginning of December to the end of February, The tour leads from the 8-seater Jet lift valley station to the 8er Alm via the Hochfügen 2000 valley station (difference in elevation: 635 m). After a well-deserved snack in the pizzeria of the 8er Alm (kitchen open until 9 pm) nothing stands in the way of an exclusive downhill ride.

To ensure safety and to allow for piste grooming by snowcats, all other slopes apart from 11, 13 and 14 remain closed and must not be used under any circumstances.

Four-legged friends

Holidays with loved ones are wonderful - and holidays with man's best friend are the best of all Pets are always welcome in Hochfügen to ensure that they aren't left alone at home. That is, assuming they are well behaved! There is nothing to stand in the way of tobogganing or cross-country skiing, snowshoe hikes or guided ski tours with your four-legged friend. In general, dogs are allowed to move about freely, but on some hikes it is still advisable for safety reasons to keep them on a leash. It is necessary to keep an eye even on well-behaved, friendly dogs in the great outdoors, because the Zillertal Alps are full of temptations and dangers! A muzzle is obligatory when they travel by public transport, shuttles or taxis.

Those who would like to enjoy a few hours on their own on Hochfügen's slopes without their beloved pet can take advantage of the professional dog sitting service offered by tierisch-vital in Fügenberg. On this local farm, your dog can move freely and will not be kennelled while you get a little break.
